What types of fares apply in Madrid?

Madrid's Regulated Parking Service incorporates the possibility of discounting or penalising the base rate according to vehicle emissions.

Since the incorporation of the sustainability strategy "Madrid 360", the Madrid City Council has created the "Dynamic Rate" concept for the SER zone. This rate can vary according to the level of nitrogen dioxide in the air, i.e. the more pollution, the higher the amount per ticket. Therefore,

To calculate this nitrogen dioxide concentration, the City Council takes into account the results of the 12 measurement stations spread throughout the city, which are representative of the exposure of the urban population to atmospheric pollutants. These stations are: Tres Olivos, Sanchinarro, Barajas Pueblo, Urbanización Embajada, Arturo Soria, Plaza del Carmen, Retiro, Méndez Álvaro, Vallecas, Villaverde, Farolillo and Ensanche de Vallecas.

Don't worry, we'll let you know. If the protocol has been activated, before making your payment, telpark will notify you which section you are in so that you know how much you have to pay before you pay. This information will also be available at the parking meters and on the Madrid.es website. And if you want to be the first to know, you can register with the air quality monitoring system and receive all the updates by text message.

Every time you select the amount or the parking time from the app, the app consults the city council services to find out the parameters that influence the rate that will be applied to you. The rates are associated with the DGT classification of vehicles, according to their polluting potential, so that vehicles that pollute less will pay less.

These parameters are taken into account when you enter your number plate number in the parking meter so that, depending on the type and age of your car, a different rate is applied.

The reductions and surcharges are set according to 4 distinctive signs:

  • Zero emissions, with a 100% reduction of the fee, i.e. they will be able to park free of charge. Mopeds, tricycles, quadricycles and motorbikes; passenger cars; light vans, vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods vehicles classified in the DGT Vehicle Register as battery electric vehicles (BEV), extended range electric vehicles (REEV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) with a minimum range of 40 kilometres, or fuel cell vehicles. 100% reduction.
  • ECO, with a 50% reduction. Cars, light vans, vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods vehicles classified in the Vehicle Register as plug-in hybrid vehicles with a range of less than 40 kilometres, non-plug-in hybrid vehicles (HEV), vehicles powered by compressed or liquefied natural gas (CNG and LNG), or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles. In any case, they must meet the criteria of label C. 50% reduction.
  • C, which will pay 10% less. Petrol cars and light vans registered from January 2006 and diesel cars and light vans registered from 2014. Vehicles with more than 8 seats and goods vehicles, both petrol and diesel, registered from 2014. Therefore, petrol vehicles must comply with Euro 4, 5 and 6 standards, and diesel vehicles must comply with Euro 6. Reduction of 10%.
  • B, which will have no reduction or surcharge. Petrol cars and light vans registered from January 2000 and diesel cars from January 2006. • A: All those vehicles not included in the previous labels. Surcharge of 25%.

There are also surcharges depending on the level of occupancy. It will be the town hall's system that will finally tell us how much we have to pay, depending on when the payment is made.
