Access to historic centres
The increase in car traffic in Lisbon in recent years has been particularly relevant in the historic centres. The geographic and demographic characteristics of these areas have contributed to the perpetuation of a disorderly parking of vehicles that compromises the safety of residents, local businesses and visitors. Safety of access to these areas, particularly in terms of ease of access for assistance vehicles in the event of an accident, is a major concern.
To ensure the desired levels of safety and effective management of access and parking, the development of access and parking areas has involved the adoption of measures to restrict and reduce motor vehicle traffic, thus creating conditioned access areas for motor vehicles. Traffic has been restricted in some of the most emblematic areas of Lisbon, such as:
Bairro Alto, Alfama, Santa Catarina/Bica and the Castelo; these are historic areas that are intended to be preserved and where you can get around on foot and enjoy all that they have to offer.
The main objective of this measure is to improve safety conditions, as well as the urban rehabilitation of these neighbourhoods, by regulating access, creating parking areas and developing projects to return the streets of the historic neighbourhoods to the citizens.
